Posted on 06/21/2023
National Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated annually on June 21. It is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

Each year, Our Lady of Sorrows School hosts a celebration in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day. Supported and championed by Indigenous Leaders and Elders in the community and including the St. Joseph-Scollard Hall (SJSH) student-group Mkwa Doodem who assisted with the day's activities.

The above-mentioned activities included:

- Strawberry Teachings and Jam Making
- Drumming
- Lacrosse
- Wampum Belt Teachings

The day began with opening remarks from Our Lady of Sorrows Principal Stacey Malette and a drum song by Tory Fisher, Indigenous Studies Teacher at SJSH and the Mkwa Doodem students; Carla's Kitchen catered a delicious meal for all the students in attendance. The celebration concluded with a Pow Wow and dance demonstration, welcome to all who wished to participate.
